Pune is one of India's most significant export hubs. Chakan MIDC, Bhosari MIDC, Ranjangaon MIDC, and Pimpri-Chinchwad together account for a substantial share of Maharashtra's industrial exports -- auto components, engineering goods, precision machinery, electronics, and chemicals shipping to buyers in Europe, the USA, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
Most of these goods travel by sea. And most export-related packaging failures -- detained shipments, damaged cargo, rejected consignments -- come from using domestic-grade packaging for international sea freight.
Seaworthy packaging is the solution. This guide explains what it is, what it includes, who needs it, and how to source it in Pune.
---
Seaworthy packaging is a category of heavy-duty export packaging built specifically to withstand the conditions of ocean freight. It goes beyond simply putting goods in a wooden box. It addresses three primary hazards of sea freight:
Physical impact: Containers are loaded, unloaded, transferred between vessels, and transported by truck and rail. Each handling point involves vibration, impact, and the risk of toppling or dropping.
Moisture and condensation: A steel container on a sea voyage experiences significant temperature fluctuations -- hot during daytime in tropical waters, cold at night. This causes condensation inside the container, which soaks unprotected cargo. 20 to 30 days of this can destroy leather goods, rust metal components, and ruin electronics.
Stacking pressure: A 20-foot container fully loaded and stacked six containers high in a vessel exerts enormous downward force. Packaging that is not built to bear this load will collapse.
Seaworthy packaging addresses all three with a multi-layer system of structural wood, moisture barriers, cushioning, and securing materials.

The outer structure is an ISPM-15 certified wooden crate made from seasoned timber -- typically pine, silver wood, or hardwood depending on the weight of the cargo. The crate is designed and built to the specific dimensions of the cargo with 50 to 100mm clearance on each side for inner layers.
For loads above 500 kg, the crate base includes a wooden pallet integrated into the base so forklift entry is possible from two or four sides.
HDPE tarpaulin or aluminium foil lining is placed inside the wooden crate to create a moisture barrier. This prevents condensation from reaching the cargo even when the exterior of the crate is wet from sea spray or container condensation.
For extremely moisture-sensitive cargo like electronics or precision instruments, an aluminium foil vacuum bag is used instead -- the bag is vacuum-sealed after the product is placed inside, removing all air and moisture from the immediate environment.
If the cargo includes ferrous metal components -- castings, forgings, machined steel parts, auto components -- Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) film or bags are placed in direct contact with the metal surface. VCI film releases chemical vapours that form a molecular protective layer on the metal, preventing oxidation (rust) during transit.
Without VCI protection, precision metal components exported in sea freight regularly arrive with surface corrosion, particularly in monsoon-season shipments when ambient humidity is high.
Polyethylene foam sheets (5 to 50mm depending on fragility) or bubble wrap rolls are placed between the product and the inner walls of the crate to absorb impact and vibration. For extremely fragile goods, custom foam cut-outs are shaped to the exact profile of the product.
Silica gel desiccant packets are placed inside the sealed packaging at the rate of 1 to 3 units per cubic foot of internal volume. They absorb any residual moisture inside the sealed package over the duration of the sea voyage.
Once the crates are loaded into the container, PP strapping or steel lashing bands are used to secure the load to the container floor. Wooden chocks are placed around the base of the crates to prevent movement during sea transit. This is called container lashing and choking -- mandatory for heavy cargo.

Auto component exporters in Chakan MIDC, Bhosari MIDC, and Ranjangaon MIDC shipping castings, forgings, precision parts, and assemblies to automotive OEMs in Germany, Japan, and the USA.
Engineering goods exporters shipping custom machinery, industrial equipment, and fabricated structures to buyers in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
Electronics manufacturers shipping PCBs, control panels, and electronic assemblies that are sensitive to moisture, static, and physical impact.
Chemical and industrial goods exporters shipping drums, IBCs, and bulk materials that require structural wooden skids and outer protection for sea freight.
Defence and aerospace component manufacturers shipping precision instruments and components that require custom seaworthy wooden crating with exact dimensional tolerances.

A Hadapsar-based manufacturer of industrial valve testing equipment was exporting hydraulic test rigs to a buyer in Saudi Arabia. Each rig weighed approximately 650 kg and had precision hydraulic components and electronic control panels.
For the first two shipments, the company used standard domestic-grade plywood boxes. The first shipment arrived with minor denting of the outer casing -- accepted but complained about. The second shipment arrived with a cracked control panel housing. The Saudi buyer rejected the unit.
Repair and re-shipment cost: Rs. 4.8 lakhs. Loss of next order: Rs. 12 lakhs.
After switching to custom seaworthy wooden crates with inner HDPE lining, foam cushioning, VCI wrapping of hydraulic components, and silica gel packets -- the next four shipments arrived without a single complaint. The Saudi buyer reinstated the supply contract.

Auto components (small to medium, under 50 kg per piece): 5-ply corrugated inner packaging, VCI film wrap on metal surfaces, silica gel inside, wooden export crate outer packaging, ISPM-15 certified pallets.
Precision machinery (50 to 500 kg): Custom wooden crate, HDPE lining, foam cushioning on all surfaces, VCI wrapping of metal parts, silica gel packets at 2 units per cubic foot, ISPM-15 certification.
Control panels and electronics (any weight): Aluminium foil vacuum bag inner seal, anti-static bubble wrap, foam cushioning, wooden crate outer packaging, desiccant.
Heavy machinery (above 500 kg): Heavy-duty wooden crate with 32mm or thicker timber, integrated pallet base, HDPE tarpaulin lining, steel lashing bands, wooden chocking inside container.

Seaworthy packaging is heavy-duty packaging built to protect cargo during ocean freight. It combines ISPM-15 certified wooden structures, moisture barriers, inner cushioning, VCI corrosion protection, and desiccant to protect against the three main sea freight hazards: physical impact, moisture, and stacking pressure.
Seaworthy packaging is mandatory wherever the shipping contract specifies it, and strongly recommended for all sea freight of industrial, mechanical, electronic, or precision goods. For lightweight consumer goods in corrugated boxes via courier or air freight, standard export-grade corrugated packaging is sufficient.
Seaworthy packaging cost depends on cargo dimensions, weight, and specification. Basic seaworthy wooden crate with HDPE lining starts from Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 2,500 per unit for small components. Full seaworthy packaging system for machinery above 200 kg starts from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 25,000 per unit. Contact Upackarts at +91-88560-64045 for a quote with your dimensions.
Yes. Any wooden crate or pallet used in international sea freight must be ISPM-15 certified -- heat-treated or fumigated -- and must carry the official ISPM-15 mark. This applies to all seaworthy wooden packaging.
Properly specified seaworthy packaging protects cargo for 30 to 90 days of sea transit, which covers even the longest freight routes including India to the US West Coast or India to South America. The desiccant must be sized correctly -- use 2 to 3 silica gel units per cubic foot for voyages above 30 days.
