Surface rust on precision metal components is one of the most common -- and most avoidable -- causes of export rejection for Indian manufacturers.
A machined steel shaft or casting that passes quality inspection at your Chakan or Bhosari facility can arrive at a German or Japanese buyer with visible surface corrosion after 22 to 28 days in a sea freight container. The part is technically intact. But the surface rust means rejection -- it signals possible dimensional change at the surface, potential contamination of hydraulic systems, and quality management failure in the eyes of the buyer.
VCI packaging -- Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor packaging -- is the standard solution used by metal component exporters worldwide to prevent exactly this.
---
VCI stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. VCI materials contain chemical compounds -- typically amines, nitrites, or carboxylates -- that slowly evaporate (volatilise) at room temperature and form a thin, invisible molecular layer on nearby metal surfaces.
This molecular layer prevents the electrochemical reactions that cause rust and oxidation. It does not change the metal surface -- it is not a coating, not a grease, and not a plating. The layer is molecularly thin and evaporates cleanly when the package is opened and the part is exposed to air.
VCI protection works inside a sealed package. As long as the package is sealed, the VCI vapour saturates the air inside and continuously deposits on all metal surfaces within reach.
---
VCI packaging is required for any metal component that:
Has precision machined surfaces (shafts, bores, flanges, races, gears)
Is made from ferrous metal (steel, cast iron, mild steel)
Travels by sea freight for more than 7 days
Is shipped during or after the Indian monsoon season (June to September) when humidity is highest
Is destined for a buyer with tight surface finish specifications (automotive, aerospace, precision instruments)
VCI is not typically required for:
Stainless steel components (naturally corrosion-resistant)
Aluminium and non-ferrous alloys (do not rust in the same way)
Components that will be immediately painted or plated after receipt at the buyer

Polyethylene film impregnated with VCI compounds. Available in rolls for wrapping individual components, or in bags for placing components inside. Standard thickness: 50 to 100 microns.
Best for: Individual component wrapping, inner bag for corrugated box packaging, and inner liner for wooden export crates.
Application: Wrap each component individually in VCI film immediately after inspection and before any other packaging step. Seal the film with tape to create a sealed environment around the component.
Pre-made bags in various sizes, sealed with a zip-lock or heat seal. The component goes inside the bag, which is then sealed.
Best for: Small to medium components with complex shapes that are difficult to wrap individually (bearings, bushings, fasteners, sensors, connectors).
Kraft paper impregnated with VCI compounds. Used to wrap components or line the inside of corrugated boxes and wooden crates.
Best for: Lining the inside of packaging enclosures around components that are too large to wrap individually. Also used as interleaving between stacked metal plates and sheets.
Liquid VCI that is sprayed directly onto metal surfaces or placed as a liquid emitter sachet inside sealed packaging. The liquid slowly releases VCI vapour to protect all metal surfaces within the sealed space.
Best for: Large machinery and equipment where wrapping individual surfaces is not practical.

A Kharadi-based distributor of electronic connectors and printed circuit board assemblies was shipping to a manufacturing plant in Chennai via road freight during the 2024 monsoon season. The connectors were shipped in standard corrugated boxes with no VCI protection.
Three consecutive consignments showed connector oxidation on arrival. The brass and steel contact pins had surface tarnishing that caused intermittent connectivity failures in the buyer's assembly process. Two of the three consignments were rejected.
Cost of three months of rejections: Rs. 1.2 lakhs.
After switching to VCI poly bags for individual connector packs plus silica gel packets inside each sealed carton, the oxidation problem stopped entirely in the very next shipment.
VCI bag cost per carton: Rs. 18. Silica gel cost per carton: Rs. 6. Total additional packaging cost: Rs. 24 per carton.

A Bhosari MIDC manufacturer supplying precision steel bushings and shafts to an automotive buyer in Germany was experiencing a 9 percent surface rejection rate on incoming inspection at the German facility. The rejections cited light surface corrosion on machined bores and shaft diameters.
The bushings were individually wrapped in plain poly bags and shipped in 5-ply corrugated boxes with bubble wrap lining. No VCI protection, no silica gel.
After switching to VCI film wrapping of each component followed by VCI bag sealing, with silica gel packets inside each box at 3 units per cubic foot, the rejection rate dropped to zero over the following 8 months. The German buyer issued a supplier quality award at the end of the year.

VCI and silica gel work together to address different aspects of the corrosion problem:
VCI provides active chemical protection against the electrochemical reactions that cause rust.
Silica gel reduces the moisture level inside the sealed package, which reduces the rate of oxidation and prevents mould.
Together they provide the most comprehensive protection for metal components in sea freight:
Step 1: Wrap component in VCI film or place in VCI bag. Seal.
Step 2: Place silica gel packets (2 to 3 units per cubic foot) inside the sealed inner packaging.
Step 3: Place sealed inner package in corrugated box or wooden crate.
Step 4: Seal outer packaging with BOPP tape (H-tape method).
This system protects ferrous metal components for sea freight routes of up to 45 days without any surface corrosion.

VCI stands for Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor. VCI packaging materials contain chemical compounds that slowly release protective vapour inside a sealed package, forming an invisible molecular layer on metal surfaces that prevents rust and oxidation.
VCI is primarily used for ferrous metals (steel, cast iron, mild steel). Stainless steel, aluminium, copper, and brass can also benefit from VCI protection in certain environments, though they are less susceptible to corrosion than ferrous metals.
Inside a properly sealed package, VCI protection typically lasts 12 to 24 months depending on the VCI product type and packaging integrity. For sea freight purposes (30 to 45 days), standard VCI film and bags provide complete protection.
VCI bags and film can be reused if they are not damaged and have not been exposed to moisture or contaminants. However, the VCI compound in the film is slowly depleted over time. Reuse is acceptable for short-duration protection but fresh VCI packaging should be used for export shipments.
Yes, both are recommended for sea freight. VCI actively prevents rust through chemical protection. Silica gel reduces moisture levels inside the sealed package. Together they provide significantly better protection than either alone, particularly for sea freight routes above 15 days duration.
