Packing tape is the last line of defence in every shipment. A box perfectly packed with the right materials, wrong tape, opens in transit. The product spills. The customer does not buy again.
Yet tape is often the most under-specified item in any packaging purchase. Most businesses just ask for "brown tape" without specifying the parameters that determine whether it holds.
This guide covers everything you need to specify BOPP packing tape correctly for your packaging operation.
---
BOPP stands for Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene. It is a clear or brown plastic film that is biaxially stretched — stretched in both machine direction and cross direction during manufacturing — which gives it high tensile strength in both directions.
BOPP packing tape is made by coating one side of this BOPP film with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. When pressed onto a corrugated surface, the adhesive bonds to the paper fibre and holds.
BOPP tape is the most widely used packaging tape in India for corrugated box sealing across e-commerce, manufacturing, and distribution.
---
The total thickness of the BOPP film plus adhesive layer, measured in microns.
35 to 40 micron: Economy grade. For light e-commerce shipments under 2 kg on domestic courier. Not suitable for heavy boxes or rough handling.
45 to 50 micron: Standard grade. The most common specification for Indian industrial use. Suitable for boxes up to 15 kg on domestic freight.
55 to 65 micron: Heavy duty. For boxes above 15 kg, rough handling in port operations, export packaging. Significantly higher tear resistance.
Measured in grams per 25mm (g/25mm) — the force required to peel the tape at 180 degrees from a stainless steel surface.
Light adhesion (under 400 g/25mm): For light parcels and applications where the tape may need to be removed cleanly.
Standard adhesion (400 to 600 g/25mm): For general industrial and e-commerce packaging on corrugated boxes.
High adhesion (above 600 g/25mm): For rough corrugated surfaces, recycled-content boxes, cold chain packaging, and export shipments.
A common mistake: buying high-micron tape with low adhesion. The tape is physically strong but does not bond well to the corrugated — it peels from the surface rather than tearing. Specify both micron AND adhesion.
48mm: The standard e-commerce and light industrial width. Fits standard tape dispensers.
72mm: For heavy boxes and wide seams where the wider tape provides better coverage of the box join.
100mm and above: For specialised industrial applications and large corrugated shipper boxes.

Transparent tape that allows the box surface (including pre-printed text and labels) to show through. Preferred for branded corrugated boxes where the print should remain visible.
Tan or brown coloured tape — the most common in Indian industry. Used where the box appearance is not critical and a unified brown-on-brown look is preferred.
Custom printed with your brand name, logo, or message. Available in 1 to 3 colour printing. Minimum order typically 30 to 50 rolls.
Printed tape serves two functions: branding (your logo is visible on every parcel) and tamper evidence (if the tape is peeled and replaced, the print is disrupted — making tampering visible).
BOPP film reinforced with embedded fibreglass threads (filaments). Extremely high tensile strength. Used for bundling heavy items, strapping large boxes, and applications where the tape must resist very high tension without elongating.
Not a standard sealing tape — used as a strapping alternative for lightweight bundling applications.

The most important technique in corrugated box sealing — and the most ignored.
Standard method: one strip of tape down the centre seam of the top and bottom of the box.
H-tape method: three strips — one down the centre seam, one along each of the two edge seams (parallel to the centre strip), forming an H shape on both top and bottom.
The edge seams of a corrugated box are significantly weaker than the centre. Under stress, boxes fail at the corners — not the centre. The H-tape method reinforces the two edge seams that standard sealing ignores.
For all boxes above 3 kg and any box containing fragile goods: H-tape method is mandatory.

Every parcel you ship is a moving advertisement. Your brand name on the tape means every courier handler, warehouse worker, receiving manager, and customer who touches the box sees your brand.
Custom printed BOPP tape is available with your logo and brand name in 1, 2, or 3 colours. Minimum order: 30 rolls at 48mm width. Cost premium over standard tape: typically 40 to 60 percent — but the branding value on high-volume shipments is significant.

For standard industrial use: 48mm width, 45 to 50 micron thickness, 450 to 550 g/25mm adhesion. This covers boxes up to 15 kg in normal domestic freight handling. For heavy boxes above 15 kg or export, use 55 micron with 600+ g/25mm adhesion.
Both are BOPP packing tape with the same functional properties. Clear tape is transparent — suitable for branded boxes where the print should show through. Brown tape is tan coloured — used where box appearance is secondary and a uniform look is preferred.
Yes, if you ship above 50 orders per month. Custom printed tape is also a tamper-evident measure — tampering disrupts the print, making it immediately visible. Most e-commerce sellers shipping above 200 orders per month find branded tape pays for itself in brand recognition and perceived product quality.
