Guide
India's cold chain packaging market is driven by pharmaceutical exports, vaccine distribution, fresh food e-commerce, and the growing modern retail sector. Excursions outside the required temperature range — even brief ones — can render pharmaceutical products ineffective, spoil food products, and violate regulatory requirements.
---
+15°C to +25°C (Controlled Room Temperature): Most pharmaceutical finished products, medical devices, cosmetics. Standard for most ambient drug storage.
+2°C to +8°C (Refrigerated): Biologics, certain vaccines, insulin, blood products, some diagnostics, fresh produce.
-20°C (Frozen): Certain vaccines (varicella, yellow fever), some biologics, plasma products.
-80°C (Ultra-cold): mRNA vaccines, some gene therapy products. Requires specialised dry ice or ultra-low temperature systems.
For most Indian pharmaceutical and food cold chain: the 2°C to 8°C range is the critical one.
---
The most widely used insulated packaging in India. EPS foam provides excellent thermal insulation (k-value approximately 0.038 W/m·K) at low weight and cost.
For 2°C to 8°C maintenance over 24 to 48 hours: 25mm to 40mm EPS wall thickness with sufficient refrigerant (gel packs).
For 48 to 72 hours: 40 to 60mm EPS wall thickness.
EPS boxes are not recyclable in standard Indian municipal waste streams.
For 2°C to 8°C maintenance over 12 to 24 hours: corrugated box with aluminium foil insulation liner and gel packs. Lower insulation performance than EPS but recyclable and lighter.
---
Water ice (0°C melt point): Cheapest refrigerant but melts and can leak. Suitable for short-duration 2°C to 8°C shipments (under 24 hours).
Gel packs (water gel, 0°C to 4°C): Pre-frozen gel packs maintain 2°C to 8°C. No leakage risk. Reusable after refreezing. Standard for pharmaceutical and food cold chain.
Phase Change Material (PCM) at 5°C: More precise temperature control at 5°C. More expensive than standard gel packs but maintains 2°C to 8°C more reliably in variable ambient temperatures.
Dry ice (-78.5°C): For frozen products requiring -20°C or below. Sublimates to CO2 — no liquid residue. Requires specialised shipper and IATA-compliant labelling for air freight.
---
Standard silica gel performance drops significantly below 20°C. For cold chain packaging boxes where desiccant is also needed (pharmaceutical dry products at 2°C to 8°C): clay desiccant maintains better adsorption capacity at cold temperatures.

For pharmaceutical APIs in cold chain: heat-sealed HDPE inner bags inside corrugated boxes provide moisture protection even at cold temperatures where condensation may form on surfaces.

For regulated pharmaceutical cold chain: temperature data loggers or USB temperature recorders provide continuous monitoring throughout transit, with data downloaded on receipt to verify no excursion occurred.
For food cold chain: time-temperature indicators (TTI labels) provide a simple visual indication of whether cumulative temperature exposure has been within the acceptable range.

Standard for domestic Indian pharmaceutical cold chain (24 to 48 hour): EPS foam box (40mm wall thickness), 4 to 6 pre-frozen gel packs surrounding the product, corrugated outer carton for protection, temperature logger inside. This system maintains 2°C to 8°C for 36 to 48 hours at ambient temperatures up to 40°C.
Gel pack weight: approximately 1 kg of gel pack per litre of internal EPS box volume for 24-hour protection at 40°C ambient. For 48-hour protection: approximately 1.5 kg per litre. Validate your specific configuration with a pre-shipment temperature qualification test.
Yes — clay desiccant is preferred over silica gel for cold chain applications because it maintains better moisture adsorption below 20°C. Use clay desiccant bags inside cold chain boxes requiring desiccant, particularly for pharmaceutical dry products and diagnostic kits.
