Guide
Edge and corner damage is the second most common cause of packaging transit damage after impact from drops. The solution in every case is an edge protector — a material placed over the edge or corner before strapping, stacking, or transit that distributes the force away from the vulnerable substrate.
Three main edge protector types are widely used in Indian packaging: foam profiles, plastic U-channels, and honeycomb cardboard angle boards. Each is optimal for a different set of applications.

Foam edge protectors are extruded EPE (Expanded Polyethylene) foam in L-profile or U-profile cross-sections. The key distinction from rigid protectors: foam ABSORBS impact energy through compression. Rigid protectors resist impact through structural strength.
For fragile products where drop damage is the primary concern — ceramics, glassware, electronic assemblies, precision instruments — foam edge protectors are the correct choice. They compress on impact and absorb the kinetic energy that would otherwise transfer to the product.
Glass panels: U-profile foam on all four edges prevents the brittle glass edge from chipping on contact with racks, transport vehicles, or stacked panels. Use foam-lined U-channel to prevent direct foam-to-glass surface contact that can mark polished glass.
Corrugated box corners: L-profile foam on all eight corners of a corrugated box provides both edge protection and impact cushioning. Combined with foam sheet lining on all six faces, this is the standard for fragile goods packaging.
Furniture: L-profile foam on table corners and chair legs during transport. The foam conforms to the furniture surface contour and prevents the corner finish from chipping on contact with transport vehicle walls.

Plastic U-channel edge guards (HDPE or PVC) clip over edges to protect against abrasion and chipping during handling. They resist impact through structural rigidity — they do not absorb energy, they redistribute it across the edge profile.
The spring tension in the U-channel walls grips the material edge without adhesive. Jaw widths from 1mm to 18mm cover materials from thin sheet metal to 18mm plywood.
Sheet metal edges: Sheet metal has very sharp edges that damage other surfaces and packaging materials on contact. U-profile edge guards protect handlers from cuts and protect the packaging from puncture.
Ceramic tiles: Tile edges are brittle and chip on any lateral impact. U-profile edge guards on the four edges of stacked tile packages prevent edge chipping throughout transit.
Plywood and board panels: 9mm to 18mm jaw U-profile on plywood sheet edges for racking, storage, and transit.

Honeycomb cardboard corners provide high compressive strength (400 to 600 kg per corner) at very low weight, and are 100 percent recyclable with corrugated cardboard.
They are structurally superior to foam for stacking applications — where multiple pallets are stacked and the compressive load on lower-pallet corners is the failure mode. Foam corners compress permanently under sustained load; honeycomb corners maintain structural integrity.
Heavy pallet stacking: 100mm height honeycomb corners on the four upper corners of palletised loads where multiple pallets are stacked. Distributes the upper pallet's leg load across the corrugated surface.
EU export packaging: Honeycomb is 100% recyclable with no separation required — complies with EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive requirements for recyclable packaging materials.
Sustainability-certified supply chains: For businesses with ISO 14001 commitments or customer sustainability requirements, honeycomb replaces foam in corner protection applications.

For corrugated boxes going by domestic courier: foam L-profile corner protectors on all eight corners provide good impact cushioning. For palletised loads going by road freight: combine corrugated angle boards (for PP strapping load distribution) with foam corner protectors (for impact protection). The two serve different functions.
Use foam U-profile edge guards for glass panel edges — foam absorbs the impact that would chip brittle glass edges. For polished glass surfaces, use foam-lined U-channel to prevent the foam surface from marking the glass. Place protectors on all four edges and stack with foam sheet interleaving between panels.
For compressive loads (from pallet stacking): honeycomb is 2 to 3 times stronger (400 to 600 kg vs 100 to 200 kg for equivalent foam). For impact cushioning (from drops): foam absorbs more kinetic energy per volume. The correct choice depends on your primary failure mode.
