VCI compounds — typically amine carboxylates and benzotriazoles — vapourise slowly at room temperature from the packaging material surface. This vapour fills the enclosed packaging space. The molecules adsorb onto nearby metal surfaces, forming an invisible molecular monolayer.
This monolayer displaces adsorbed moisture from the metal surface and blocks the electrochemical reaction that causes corrosion. The protection is entirely non-contact — the VCI works through the vapour phase, protecting surfaces that the packaging material never physically touches.
The protection is completely invisible, zero-thickness, and does not affect subsequent processing. VCI-protected components can be welded, painted, plated, or machined without cleaning or removing any residue.
