Angle boards, also called edge protectors or corner boards, are L-shaped profiles made from compressed corrugated or solid fibreboard. They are placed along the vertical edges and corners of palletised loads and individual packages before strapping. Without angle boards, PP or steel strapping cuts directly into the corrugated box edge under tension, damaging the top layer of the box and reducing its compression strength at the point where stacking load is transferred.
A damaged box edge at the strap line is the most common cause of pallet load instability and in-transit box collapse. Angle boards distribute the strap tension across a wider area, protecting the box edge and maintaining the structural integrity of the entire pallet.
Angle boards are specified by wall thickness (2mm to 7mm), profile width on each face (typically 35mm x 35mm or 50mm x 50mm), and length. Standard lengths are 600mm, 800mm, 1000mm, and 1200mm to match standard pallet and carton heights. Custom lengths are available cut to specification.
Thinner angle boards (2-3mm) are used on light corrugated pallet loads and individual carton edges. Heavier angle boards (5-7mm) are used for heavy pallet loads, export crates, and applications where significant strap tension or forklift handling creates corner stress.
Pallet loads in MIDC dispatch operations — whether automotive parts, pharmaceutical goods, FMCG products, or engineering components — should use angle boards as standard practice. The cost per angle board is minimal compared to the damage risk. Upackarts supplies angle boards to manufacturers across Chakan, Bhosari, Talegaon, and Pimpri-Chinchwad MIDC on regular scheduled supply.
A standard pallet requires 4 angle boards — one on each vertical corner of the stacked load. For tall pallet loads (above 1.2m) with multiple straps at different heights, additional boards at each strap line may be needed. The standard configuration is 4 corner boards spanning the full height of the pallet load.
For standard 3-ply or 5-ply corrugated pallet loads strapped with 15mm PP strap, 3mm angle boards are adequate. For heavy pallet loads above 500 kg or where steel strapping is used, 5-7mm angle boards are recommended. Contact Upackarts for a recommendation based on your load weight and strap width.
Angle boards can typically be reused 2-3 times if they are not crushed or wet. Many manufacturing operations collect angle boards from incoming shipments and reuse them on outgoing pallets. Quality deteriorates with each use, so replace boards that show crushing or delamination.
