Clay desiccant uses natural montmorillonite clay — a mineral requiring minimal processing, making it 30 to 50 percent cheaper than equivalent silica gel. Best for cold chain applications and cost-sensitive general packaging.
Above 25°C: Silica gel absorbs 30 to 35 percent vs clay at 25 to 30 percent. Silica gel marginally better in hot Indian ambient conditions.
Below 20°C: Clay maintains absorption; silica gel performance drops significantly. Clay is superior for cold chain.
Above 50°C: Clay releases absorbed moisture. Silica gel stable to 80°C. Do not use clay above 50°C.
General industrial packaging (cost-sensitive). Cold chain below 20°C (clay outperforms silica gel). Food-contact packaging (FDA GRAS status). Container sea freight bulk desiccant (100g to 500g bags).
Regenerable: Heat to 120 to 150°C for 1 to 2 hours to drive off moisture. Repeat 5 to 8 times before significant capacity loss.
Sachet material: Tyvek or woven cotton. Sizes: 5g to 500g.
