At this humidity level, unprotected ferrous metal surfaces — machined shafts, gear teeth, bearing races, hydraulic ports — develop surface rust within 24 to 72 hours.

VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) packaging releases chemical vapour that forms a molecular protective layer on nearby metal surfaces. Inside a sealed VCI bag, the concentration of inhibitor is sufficient to protect the metal surface for 12 to 24 months.
