Fragile goods have the highest damage rates in Indian transit. Ceramics, glassware, laboratory instruments, electronic assemblies, and decorative goods all share the same problem: they are destroyed by impacts that standard packaging does not absorb, and the damage is always traced back to inadequate packaging.
This step-by-step guide covers the correct packaging method for every common fragile goods category in India.
---
Before any specific technique, four principles apply to all fragile goods:
No movement: The product must not move inside the package. Any movement during transit creates impact when the product hits a packaging wall.
Six-surface protection: Every face of the product — top, bottom, front, back, left, right — must have cushioning between it and the outer box wall.
Correct outer box strength: Foam and bubble wrap inside a 3-ply box that collapses under stacking provides zero protection. The outer box must be rated for the stack load.
Double box for very fragile: For extremely fragile items — thin glass, precision optical instruments — use an inner box inside an outer box with cushioning between the two boxes as well.
---
Ceramics and glassware break from corner impact and flexural stress. They need cushioning that prevents any point contact with the package surface.
Step 1: Wrap each item individually in 5mm to 10mm bubble wrap (large bubble for irregular shapes, small bubble for smoother surfaces). Secure with tape. The bubble wrap layer should completely cover every surface with no gaps.
Step 2: Place a 25mm foam sheet pad on the base of the 5-ply corrugated box.
Step 3: Place the wrapped item on the foam base. Ensure minimum 25mm clearance to all box walls.
Step 4: Fill all gaps between the item and box walls with crumpled kraft paper, bubble wrap offcuts, or foam cut-offs. No void space.
Step 5: Place a 25mm foam sheet pad on top of the item before closing the box lid.
Step 6: Seal with H-tape method. Mark "FRAGILE — THIS WAY UP" on all four sides and the top.
For multiple items in one box: never stack ceramics directly on top of each other. Use a foam sheet divider between each layer. Heavier items on the base, lighter items on top.

Precision instruments — measuring instruments, analytical equipment, testing devices — are fragile in a different way from ceramics. They fail from vibration and minor impacts that cause internal component damage with no visible external sign.
Step 1: If the instrument has a carrying case, use it. The carrying case is engineered for the instrument's specific fragility.
Step 2: Place the instrument (in case) in an anti-static bag if it contains electronic components.
Step 3: Line all six faces of a 5-ply corrugated box with 25mm EPE foam sheet, cut to fit each face exactly.
Step 4: Place silica gel packets inside the sealed anti-static bag — 1 packet per 500ml of instrument volume.
Step 5: Centre the instrument in the foam-lined box. All six surfaces should have equal foam pressure contact. No rattling when the box is shaken.
Step 6: Seal and mark "FRAGILE — PRECISION INSTRUMENT — DO NOT IMPACT."

Key summary: Anti-static bags for ESD-sensitive components. 10mm anti-static foam lining. Silica gel for moisture protection. 5-ply corrugated outer box.

Step 1: Apply corner protectors (foam or cardboard corner guards) to all four corners of the frame.
Step 2: Wrap the face of the painting in glassine paper or acid-free tissue paper — never directly in bubble wrap, which can stick to painted surfaces.
Step 3: Wrap the entire framed painting in 5mm bubble wrap, 2 layers. Secure with tape.
Step 4: Cut two pieces of 10mm foam sheet to the exact size of the painting. Sandwich the wrapped painting between the two foam sheets.
Step 5: Place the foam-sandwiched painting in a custom or close-fitting 5-ply corrugated box. No void space.

All major Indian couriers — Bluedart, Delhivery, Ecom Express, DTDC — accept fragile goods but provide limited liability for inadequately packaged items. Their standard terms state that liability for fragile goods is conditioned on packaging meeting their minimum standards.
Bluedart's minimum packaging requirement for fragile: minimum 5-ply corrugated outer box, inner cushioning on all six faces, fragile marking on all four sides.
If you are shipping fragile goods regularly: declare the contents and their value at booking. Purchase the courier's additional cover. Document with photographs before dispatch.
Photograph every fragile shipment before sealing. If damage occurs, the photograph proves the item was intact when packed and the packaging was adequate.

Use 5-ply double-wall corrugated boxes with minimum 20 BF for all fragile shipments going by domestic road freight or sea freight. 3-ply is acceptable for very light fragile items under 500g on domestic courier only.
For ceramics and glassware: 2 layers of large bubble wrap covering all surfaces. For painted or polished surfaces: place tissue or glassine paper against the surface first, then bubble wrap over it. For very fragile items: 3 layers with foam sheet as the outer layer before boxing.
Use double boxing for extremely fragile or high-value items: glass art, precision instruments, thin-walled ceramics, high-value electronics. The outer box absorbs the major impact; the inner box and cushioning between the two boxes absorb the residual energy before it reaches the product.
